Review of the Season
The American Soccer League operated with ten teams in two conferences in the 1974 season. The league planned an 18-game regular season schedule for each team, with nine home games.
The five teams competing in the East Conference Boston Astros, Connecticut Wildcats, Delaware Wings, New Jersey Brewers and New York Apollo,
The Midwest Conference was made up of returning clubs Cincinnati Comets, Cleveland Stars, Indiana Tigers, Syracuse Suns and a new franchise, the Oceaneers, from Providence, Rhode Island.
Connecticut Wildcats returned for their second season in the ASL. The Wildcats had captured the second place in the Northeast Conference in the 1973 season.
Late in June Syracuse Suns decided to disband due to financial problems. The remaining Suns fixtures were set to 0- forfeits.
In July Cincinnati Comets were taken over by the league as they refused to play by the rule of using four Americans in their league lineup.
Rhode Island Oceaneers won the 1974 A. S. L. Championship by defeating New York Apollo in the final.
