Review of the season

The American Soccer League operated with 15 teams in three conferences in what was described as its 36th campaign. Boston Astros, New York Greeks, Philadelphia Spartans and Washington Capitol Cavaliers returned from the 1971 season. 1971 member Syracuse Suns decided to sit out the 1972 and returned to league action in the 1973 season.

The Northern Conference comprised the defending champions New York Greeks; Nor’East, of New York City; Schaefer Brewers of New Jersey and Boston Astros.

In the Southern Conference there was the Philadelphia Spartans, Delaware Wings, Washington Cavaliers and Baltimore Stars.

In the newly-organized Midwest Conference the clubs before the start of the season were Cincinnati Comets, Cleveland Stars, Pittsburgh Cannons, Detroit S.C.; Chicago Inter; Louisville S.C. and St. Louis Mules. When the season kicked off the St Louis team had changed it name to the Frogs and the Detroit club had become the Mustangs. Louisville and Chicago dropped without playing in any counting games in the final standings.

A league ruling said that four or more American-born players must be on the rosters of the 15-team circuit.

The league kicked of its season on Monday May 29 in Philadelphia, where the Spartans and the New York Greeks played to a 1-1 draw.

Cincinnati Comets won the Midwest Division, Philadelphia Spartans won the Southern Conference and the N. Y. Greeks won the Northern Conference. As newcomers to the league the Comets qualified directly to the ASL Championship playoff final.

New York Greeks won the Northern Conference. Philadelphia won the Southern Conference. The Spartans and the Greeks met in the Eastern Final.

Cincinnati Comets won the 1972 American Soccer League Championship by defeating New York Greeks.
