Review of the Season
The American Soccer League operated with five clubs in the 1971 season. Three new clubs were given franchises before the season, these were the Syracuse Suns, the New York Greeks and the Capitol Cavaliers. The two returning clubs were Boston Astros and Philadelphia Spartans.
A schedule of 16 games was scheduled for each team. However, problems with lack of fields and player eligibility forced the league to cut short its schedule.
New York Greeks won the 1971 ASL Championship.
Syracuse Suns decided to sit out the 1972 ASL season and returned to league action in 1973.
