Review of the Season
After the loss of the Washington Darts and Rochester Lancers to the NASL, the ASL planned to have six teams in the 1970 season. However, a new York team never materialized.
The returning clubs were Boston Astros, Newark Ukrainian Sitch, Philadelphia Spartans, Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals and Syracuse Scorpions.

Philadelphia Spartans had finished the 1969 season in second place in the Southern Division of the ASL behind champions Washington Darts. Syracuse Scorpions won the championship of the Northern Division of the American Soccer League the previous season.
The league planned to open its season on May 17th, and that it would last until July 19.

Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals won the 1970 American Soccer League Championship.
