The American Soccer League decided to operate with two divisions in the 1967-68 season, the Major (First) Division and the Premier (Second) Division. It was planned that there would be no inter-divisional play during the regular season. It was thought that there would be used a relegation-system at the end of the season between the two divisions. However, the winners of each division ended up playing each other in a end-of-the-season playoff final for the ASL Championship.
The clubs competing in the First Division were Baltimore Flyers, Boston Tigers, Newark Ukrainian Sitch, Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals, Rochester Lancers and Washington Britannica. The Lancers and Britannica were newcomers to the league.
1966-67 ASL Champions Baltimore St. Gerard’s changed their name to Baltimore Flyers. The Flyers’ home field was Kirk Field in Baltimore.
The Premier Division consisted of Hartford Soccer Club, Connecticut; newcomers Lowell Astros, Massachusetts; New Brunswick Hungarians, New Jersey; New York Inter, New York; Newark Portuguese, New Jersey; and Paterson Roma, New Jersey.
Due to financial problems Hartford Soccer Club requested a leave of absence in October and dropped out from the league. Boston Tigers withdrew from the league in May 1968.
Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals won the First Division and qualified for the 1967-68 Playoff Finals.
New York Inter won the Premier Division and qualified for the 1967-68 Playoff Finals.
Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals won the two-game, total-goal series playoff finals, and won the 1967-68 ASL Championship.
After the season had ended Newark Portuguese, New Brunswick Hungarians, Baltimore Flyers and Paterson Roma were granted a one year leave of absence to be able to reorganize.
